Where to refuel on the way to the Adriatic
For most drivers Slovenia is a transit country on the way to Croatia – it takes about two hours to cross. On the Warsaw – Split drive (1,449 km) the distance splits like this:
| Country | Share of route | km | Petrol (95) | Diesel |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Croatia | 32% | 459 km | €1.83/l | €1.98/l |
| Poland | 27% | 388 km | €1.52/l | €1.77/l |
| Austria | 21% | 310 km | €1.84/l | €2.14/l |
| Czechia | 16% | 230 km | €1.85/l | €1.95/l |
| Slovenia | 4% | 61 km | €1.76/l | €1.98/l |
| Route average | 100% | 1,449 km | €1.75/l | €1.95/l |
- Compare Austria, Slovenia and Croatia in the table and fill up in the cheapest one, ideally before you get on the motorway.
- A full tank (about 50 l) lasts around 700 km, so one stop in Slovenia usually gets you to Dalmatia.
- Motorway stations charge more than the average – leave the motorway if you can.
| Route | km | Petrol (95) 7 l | Diesel 6 l | LPG 9 l |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Warsaw – Split | 1,449 km | €177 | €170 | €110 |
| Kraków – Split | 1,221 km | €153 | €146 | €95.81 |
Fuel names, paying and the vignette
Slovenian motorways and expressways need an electronic vignette (e-vinjeta), sold on the official DARS website and linked to your number plate. The Karawanken tunnel from Austria has a separate toll that the vignette does not cover.
