Enter how many litres you filled up and how many kilometres you drove since the previous fill-up. The calculator works out your average consumption in litres per 100 km and the cost of driving 100 km. The price per litre is filled in for you – the EU average from 28 September 2026 – but you can change it to the price at your station.

Once you know your consumption, the button below the result opens the trip cost calculator with it – just enter where you're driving from and to.

The formula

Consumption (l/100 km) = litres filled ÷ kilometres driven × 100.

For example, 42 litres over 600 km is 42 ÷ 600 × 100 = 7 l/100 km.

Measuring it accurately – the full-to-full method

  1. Fill the tank until the nozzle clicks off and reset the trip meter.
  2. Drive as usual, ideally for at least a few hundred kilometres.
  3. Fill up to full again, preferably at the same station and pump.
  4. Enter the litres from the second fill-up and the kilometres from the trip meter.

The longer the distance, the more accurate the result, because any difference in how "full" the tank is gets spread over more kilometres. Repeat it two or three times and take the average.

Why the trip computer shows less

The car's computer estimates consumption from how long the injectors stay open, not from how much fuel actually left the tank. In many cars it reads a few percent low, sometimes by 0.5 l/100 km or more. The pump figure is more reliable – and it is what you pay for.

Typical consumption

Rough figures for mixed driving outside winter:

CarPetrolDieselLPG
Small city car5.5–6.5 l4.5–5 l7–8 l
Compact6.5–8 l5–6 l8–10 l
SUV, family estate7.5–10 l6–7.5 l9.5–12 l

On the motorway at 140 km/h consumption is often 20–30% higher than at 110 km/h, and it also rises in winter and in traffic jams. What really helps is in our guide on how to reduce fuel consumption, and the cost of 100 km on different fuels is compared in the cost of driving 100 km.
