On a 1,500 km drive you'll fill up two or three times. You save the most by leaving Poland with a full tank and planning the next stop in the cheapest country on the way. German prices change many times a day, and evenings are often cheapest – more in fuel prices in Germany.
Road charges and city zones
| Country | Motorways | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Germany | free for cars | low emission zones (Umweltzone) in many cities – green sticker |
| Belgium | free for cars | tolled Liefkenshoek tunnel in Antwerp; low emission zones in large cities |
| Netherlands | free for cars | tolled Westerschelde and Kil tunnels; environmental zones for older diesels |
| France | most motorways tolled at booths (péage) | Crit'Air sticker in low emission zones, including Paris |
French motorway tolls depend on the stretch, so check them before you go – cards are accepted at the booths. Order the Crit'Air sticker on the official site, certificat-air.gouv.fr, well in advance, as it comes by post.
How to pay less
- Leave Poland with a full tank – the first few hundred kilometres through Germany are where you save the most.
- Ease off on the German autobahn – on unrestricted stretches it's easy to drive fast, and above 130 km/h consumption climbs steeply. See how to reduce fuel consumption.
- Split the cost – over this distance fuel adds up, so it's worth splitting it fairly.
