The drive to Vienna is short enough to make on one tank filled in Poland or Czechia. Austrian stations may only raise prices once a day, at noon, but can cut them at any time, so if you fill up there, mornings are often cheaper than afternoons.
The Austrian vignette
Austrian motorways and expressways require a vignette. You can choose a digital vignette linked to your number plate or a traditional windscreen sticker, from one day to a full year. The official shop is asfinag.at.
Some stretches have a separate toll on top of the vignette, including the tunnels on the A9 and A10 motorways and the A13 over the Brenner Pass. They're not on the way from Poland to Vienna, but you'll meet them heading further south – for example to Croatia.
How to pay less
- Fill up before Austria – in Poland or Czechia, whichever is cheaper.
- Remember the Czech vignette for the Czech stretch – more in fuel prices in Czechia.
- Share the car – split four ways, petrol from Kraków to Vienna is €15.33 per person.
