A ski trip from Poland to the Alps is usually about 900–1,300 km each way – Tyrol and Salzburg are closer, the Dolomites further. For 1,000 km in a car that uses 7 l/100 km, petrol costs about €130 at Polish prices today, and about €259 there and back. With four people that is about €64.85 each for the whole trip. A diesel at 6 l/100 km uses about €247 worth of fuel for the round trip.

Cars use more fuel in winter
Frost, winter tyres, the heater, slow climbs and a roof box with skis all push consumption up – typically by 10–20%. If your car normally uses 7 l/100 km, plan for about 8 l/100 km on a winter trip. Then 2,000 km there and back is about €296 of petrol, or €74.11 each with four people.
Before you go
- Austria and Italy have rules for winter driving – winter tyres, and snow chains on some roads. Check the current requirements before you set off.
- Czech and Austrian motorways need a vignette, and Italian motorways charge at toll booths. Count these separately – here we only cover fuel.
- Fill up before you drive into the mountains – fuel at resorts and on motorways is often above the average.
