On the Austrian stretch, avoid motorway stations – leaving the motorway for the next town usually means a lower price. Austrian stations may only raise prices once a day, at noon, but can cut them at any time, so mornings are often cheapest.
Vignettes and tolls
On top of fuel, you'll pay for roads in almost every country on the way:
| Country | What you need | Where to buy |
|---|---|---|
| Czechia | electronic motorway vignette | edalnice.cz |
| Austria | vignette (digital or sticker), some tunnels and passes charged separately | asfinag.at |
| Slovenia | electronic vignette | evinjeta.dars.si |
| Croatia | tolls per motorway section | hac.hr |
The alternative route through Slovakia and Hungary needs Slovak (eznamka.sk) and Hungarian (ematrica.nemzetiutdij.hu) vignettes instead. Buy vignettes on the official sites – resellers add a fee. Vignette prices change every year, so check them before you go.
How to cut the cost of the drive
- Fill up in the cheapest country on the route – on a trip this long, two fill-ups are usually enough.
- Take it easier on the motorway. Over 1,200–1,400 km, the difference between 140 and 120 km/h is well over ten litres of fuel.
- Pack luggage inside rather than on the roof where you can – a roof box noticeably raises consumption at speed.
- Split the costs fairly – see how to split fuel costs between passengers.
